The 1950s was a time of optimism. America had recently celebrated victory in World War II, industry was booming, and the humankind was looking ever forward into the future and into space. It was during this time of prosperity and hope that Jack Goodman came of age.

As a young man, Jack is a model of success with a college education, a beautiful wife and daughter, a home of his own, and a prestigious and fulfi lling engineering career. From all outward appearances, his life seems perfect, an object of envy among Saint Louis's up and coming. But inside of it are the seeds of disappointment, pain, greed, and betrayal, and even honorable adherence to a life of doing what is right and good can't protect Jack from the dark side of the American dream, calling into question everything he once held to be true about his world and his destiny.

J. J. Morgan was born in a suburb of Saint Louis, Missouri, in 1940. He enlisted in the US Army in 1961 and served seventeen months in pre-Gaddafi Libya as a topographic surveyor, spending much of his time living in a tent in the Sahara Desert. The remainder of his tour was spent at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs. After leaving the army in 1964, he worked as a surveyor for the US Forest Service and the California Department of Transportation. He obtained a degree in biological sciences and was employed as a fishery biologist by NOAA Fisheries for thirty years, working on the management of Pacific and Western Pacific Fisheries. As of 2016, he has been married for fifty years and has two children. Since 2003, he has spent several days virtually every month hiking in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, an endeavor he plans to pursue until he gets old.
